Clos de Tart Grand Cru 2018 offers a silky texture, finesse, breadth and structure… There is no shortage of words to describe this elegant wine, with its delicious aromas of cherry, raspberry, liquorice, vanilla and violet, developing spicy nuances with age. Slow to reveal their full potential, Clos de Tart wines can age for up to 25 years.
Situated in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart is one of the five Grands Crus in the village of Morey-Saint-Denis. It is the only appellation in Burgundy never to have been divided since its founding in 1141. Today, and since 1932, the nearly eight hectares of Clos de Tart and its namesake estate have been wholly owned by the Pinault family as a monopole.
The vines average 50 years of age and are cultivated using sustainable vineyard management practices, with yields limited to 30 hectolitres per hectare. The wines are aged for 18 to 24 months in 100% new oak barrels.
During the first half of the 20th century, the estate’s wines received relatively little recognition from wine lovers, lacking somewhat in richness and concentration. From 1980 onwards, significant improvements in quality became apparent, particularly in the highly successful 1985, 1989 and 1990 vintages. However, it was the arrival of Sylvain Pitiot as estate manager in 1995 that truly breathed new life into production.
The author of renowned works on Burgundy, including an authoritative atlas of the region’s vineyards, he restored the estate’s reputation by producing vintages of magnificent intensity, finally fulfilling its Grand Cru status.
Having followed sustainable farming principles, the estate has recently taken another step forward: its vineyards are now farmed organically.
