Jacques Puffeney

The Jacques Puffeney estate, located in Montigny-lès-Arsures, was long considered a guiding figure of Jura winemaking. Sometimes referred to as the “pope of vin jaune,” Jacques Puffeney produced wines steeped in tradition and emotion for over fifty years.

With a vineyard of around ten hectares, he worked with classic Jura grapes: Savagnin, Trousseau, Ploussard, and Chardonnay. Vineyard work was entirely manual, with no frills, marked by a rustic but extremely rigorous approach. The vin jaune, aged under flor for over six years, is perhaps the most accomplished expression of his style: powerful aromas of walnut, curry, forest floor, a palate of rare intensity, and phenomenal length. His red wines, notably the Trousseau, were remarkably refined, combining rusticity and elegance.

Puffeney did not seek popularity or trends, but to craft sincere, rooted wines. Since his retirement, his final cuvées have become collector’s items, sought worldwide for their authenticity. He leaves an indelible mark on Jura’s winemaking history.
