Provence

The Provence wine region, located in the southeast of France between the Alps and the Mediterranean, is the oldest wine-producing region in France with over 2,600 years of history. It benefits from an ideal Mediterranean climate, with plenty of sunshine, hot summers, mild winters, and the mistral wind that keeps the vines healthy. Provence covers around 27,000 hectares of vineyards and is distinguished by its specialization in rosé wines, which represent nearly 90% of its production, making it the leading producer of rosé in France and worldwide.

The region features several emblematic appellations, including Côtes de Provence, Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence, and Coteaux Varois en Provence, as well as more niche appellations like Bandol, Palette, Cassis, and Bellet. The main grape varieties include Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Tibouren for rosés and reds, while Rolle (Vermentino) is common in the whites.

Provence rosés are known for their pale color, freshness, and notes of red berries, citrus fruits, flowers, and Provençal herbs, with a lively and refreshing palate. The red wines, often concentrated and spicy, have excellent aging potential, particularly those from Bandol, which are primarily made from Mourvèdre. Although less common, the white wines attract with their liveliness and floral and mineral aromas.

The diversity of soils (limestone, schist, clay) and exposures fosters a range of styles depending on the terroir. Provence also benefits from a dynamic viticulture scene, with a growing number of estates working organically and biodynamically. A region of sunshine and art de vivre, Provence produces wines that embody Mediterranean conviviality and elegance, perfectly suited to summer dishes, Mediterranean cuisine, and moments of sharing.
