Grand Auxerrois

Surrounding the town of Auxerre, the Grand Auxerrois brings together several historic vineyard areas, spread across four distinct zones:

• The Auxerrois (south of Auxerre)
• The Tonnerrois (around Tonnerre)
• The Vézelien (around Vézelay)
• The Jovinien (north, near Joigny)

On these limestone slopes, Burgundy’s classic grape varieties express themselves with honesty and charm: Chardonnay and Aligoté for the whites, Pinot Noir and Gamay for the reds—alongside rarer varieties such as César, Sacy, and Melon.

The Grand Auxerrois is also home to Burgundy’s only Sauvignon Blanc appellation: Saint-Bris. These wines are remarkably fresh, aromatic, and characterful—offering a unique twist within the region.

Among the most emblematic village appellations are Irancy (structured and expressive reds),Saint-Bris (vibrant Sauvignon-based whites), and Vézelay (elegant, mineral-driven whites).

The region also includes several distinctive regional appellations such as Bourgogne Côtes d’Auxerre, Bourgogne Chitry, Coulanges-la-Vineuse, Épineuil, Tonnerre, and Côte Saint-Jacques.

The Grand Auxerrois is a discreet yet authentic corner of Burgundy—where the diversity of grapes and terroirs offers a fresh, historical, and accessible perspective on one of the world’s most renowned wine regions.
